The inactive habits and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take it upon themselves to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to avoid health risks. This could have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be harmful in the long run. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is low as a result. The specific programs are not the sole problem, but rather the mental state towards exercise that could be to blame for this high attrition rate. Take a look at most younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a lifestyle of minimal physical activity. Watch them closely and you can tell that the actual word exercise does not mean anything to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their world. To them playing and having fun is way above the exercise aspect. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can positively benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for the sake of health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Choose something you like doing, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as most of todays fitness approaches. After all how useful is an exercise program if you do not follow it!
