The couch potato lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take action to provide their bodies with an adequate amount of exercise to stay relatively healthy. This possibly has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which is not exactly positive. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is accordingly very low. It is not necessarily the programs, but rather the mental attitude towards exercise which is blameworthy for this high attrition rate. Observe some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a lifestyle of minimal physical activity. Watch them closely and see that the word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their world. To them playing and having fun is hugely more important than the exercise feature of being physically active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should pay attention to this approach. Don't try to exercise only for the sake of health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make it something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as trendy as many of the high tech fitness approaches. How effective is an exercise program if you only do it for a few months!
