The eating habits and sedentary ways of most North Americans has forced people to start doing something to provide their bodies with enough activity to maintain good health. This possibly has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness that is on the negative side. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is quite low. Maybe it is not the programs, but rather the thinking towards exercise itself which is blameworthy for this high attrition rate. Watch some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to being overweight or inactive. Watch them closely and you can see that the word exercise means nothing to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not a concept that they can understand like adults. To them playing and having fun is way more significant than the exercise component of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can positively benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for healthfulness, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Ensure it is an activity you like, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays adult fitness approaches. After all how effective is any exercise program if you only stick to it for 3 months!
