The couch potato lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take matters into their own hands to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to avoid health risks. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness that is on the negative side. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not very high. Maybe it is not the programs, but rather the approach towards exercise itself which might be responsible for this high attrition rate. Have a look at many younger children who have not yet fallen victim to sedentary habits or obesity. Watch them closely and you will realize that the word exercise means nothing to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not have a real place in their life. To them playing and having fun is above, way above, the exercise part of activities. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should take note of this approach. Don't try to exercise just for the sake of health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays adult fitness approaches. After all how useful is an exercise program if you turf it after only several months!
