The sedentary lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to intiate action to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to stay relatively healthy. This might have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which actually does more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is low as a result. Maybe it is not the programs, but rather the mental attitude to exercise that could be responsible for this high attrition rate. Look at some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise has no meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their vocabulary. To them playing and having fun is way above the exercise component of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for health reasons, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is an activity you like to do, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays advanced fitness approaches. After all what good is an exercise program if you only do it for a few months!
