The diet and sedentary lifestyle of most North Americans has forced people to intiate action to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to avoid health risks. This perhaps has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be harmful in the long run. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is low as a result. The programs themselves may not be the cause, but rather the thinking towards exercise itself that may be responsible for this high attrition rate. Look at some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and see that the word exercise does not mean anything to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their world. To them playing and having fun is way more significant than the exercise part. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise only for the sake of health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as many of todays fitness approaches. What good is a high tech exercise program if you stop doing it after a short time!
