The couch potato lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to do something to provide their bodies with adequate amounts of physical activity to avoid risks to health. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which is not exactly positive. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is pretty low. Perhaps it is not the programs or methods, but rather the attitude about exercise which may be causing this high attrition rate. Take a look at most younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a lifestyle of minimal physical activity. Watch them closely and you can see that the word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not a concept they need to incorporate into their lives. To them playing and having fun is above, way above, the exercise part of activities. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for the sake of health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as the contemporary high tech fitness approaches. How effective is an exercise program if you only do it for a few months!
