The dietary habits and inactive ways of most North Americans has forced people to intiate action to provide their bodies with adequate amounts of physical activity to prevent risks to their health. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which is not exactly positive. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is extremely low. The programs are not necessarily to blame, but rather the mind set about exercise which might be responsible for this high attrition rate. Observe some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a sedentary lifestyle. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise has no meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their vocabulary. To them playing and having fun is way more important than the exercise part of activities. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should take note of this approach. Don't try to exercise for only health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as most of todays fitness approaches. After all what good is an exercise program if you turf it after only several months!
