The inactive lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take it upon themselves to provide their bodies with adequate amounts of physical activity to maintain good health. Perhaps this has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which may do more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not very high. The programs are not necessarily to blame, but rather the mind set towards exercise that could be causing this high attrition rate. Take a look at most younger children who have not yet fallen victim to sedentary habits or obesity. Watch them closely and see that the actual word exercise means nothing to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not something they really comprehend. To them playing and having fun is hugely more important than the exercise component of physical activities. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise only for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as most of todays fitness approaches. How useful is an exercise program if you quit shortly after starting it!
