The sedentary lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to intiate action to provide their bodies with enough exercise to maintain good health. This could have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which may do more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not high at all. The programs are not necessarily to blame, but rather the mind set about exercise which might be responsible for this high attrition rate. Keep an eye on younger children who have not yet fallen victim to sedentary habits or obesity. Watch them closely and you will realize that the word exercise does not have real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not actually sink in. To them playing and having fun is way more important than the exercise component. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise only for healthfulness, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make it something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as most of todays fitness approaches. After all how effective is any exercise program if you give it up after 3 months!
