The eating habits and sedentary ways of most North Americans has forced people to take action to provide their bodies with enough exercise to minimize health risks. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which may do more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not high at all. The programs are not necessarily to blame, but rather the mind set towards exercise that could be responsible for this high attrition rate. Observe several younger children who have not yet fallen victim to and inactive lifestyle or being overweight. Watch them closely and see that the word exercise does not have real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not a concept that they can understand like adults. To them playing and having fun is way more important than the exercise aspect. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is an activity you like to do, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays advanced fitness approaches. After all what good is an exercise program if you only stick to it for 3 months!
