The couch potato lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take matters into their own hands to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to stay relatively healthy. This possibly has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness that is fairly negative. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is dismally low. Maybe it is not the programs, but rather the mind set about exercise which is perhaps responsible for this high attrition rate. Have a look at many younger children who have not yet fallen victim to obesity or low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and you can see that the word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not belong to their world. To them playing and having fun is way above the exercise aspect. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for health reasons, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make it something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as the contemporary high tech fitness approaches. How effective is an exercise program if you fail to follow it!
