The inactive lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to do something in order to provide their bodies with enough activity to minimize risks to their health. This perhaps has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which may do more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is extremely low. The programs themselves may not be the cause, but rather the thinking about exercise which might be responsible for this high attrition rate. Keep an eye on younger children who have not yet fallen victim to obesity or low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise does not have real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not have a real place in their life. To them playing and having fun is way more important than the exercise part of physical exertion. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise just for health reasons, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is enjoyable, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays adult fitness approaches. After all how effective is an exercise program if you only do it for a few months!
