The dietary habits and inactive ways of most North Americans has forced people to take it upon themselves to provide their bodies with enough activity to stay relatively healthy. This possibly has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be negative. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is accordingly very low. Perhaps it is not the programs or methods, but rather the approach towards exercise which might be responsible for this high attrition rate. Observe several younger children who have not yet fallen victim to low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and see that the actual word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not actually sink in. To them playing and having fun is way more important than the exercise part of activities. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise only for healthfulness, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as many of todays fitness approaches. How good is an exercise program if you quit shortly after starting it!
