The inactive habits and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take action on their own to provide their bodies with adequate amounts of physical activity to prevent risks to their health. This could have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness Which could be negative in the long run. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not very high. It is not necessarily the programs, but rather the mental attitude towards exercise itself that could be to blame for this high attrition rate. Take a look at most younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a sedentary lifestyle. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise means nothing to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really have a place in their language. To them playing and having fun is by far more important than the exercise component. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We need to learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise just for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be an activity you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as cutting edge as some fitness approaches. How effective is a modern exercise program if you turf it after only several months!
