The sedentary lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take things into their own hands to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to stay relatively healthy. This possibly has spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be harmful in the long run. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is accordingly very low. The specific programs are not the sole problem, but rather the view of exercise which is blameworthy for this high attrition rate. Observe many younger children who have not yet fallen victim to being overweight or inactive. Watch them closely and you can tell that the word exercise does not have real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not have a real place in their life. To them playing and having fun is way above the exercise part of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise just for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is enjoyable, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as most of todays fitness approaches. After all how useful is an exercise program if you give it up shortly after beginning!
