The inactive lifestyle and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take things into their own hands to provide their bodies with enough physical activity to prevent risks to their health. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which is not exactly positive. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is not very high. The details of the programs are probably not the issue, but rather the approach to exercise itself which is blameworthy for this high attrition rate. Observe some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to and inactive lifestyle or being overweight. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not really belong in their world. To them playing and having fun is above, way above, the exercise aspect. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We should pay attention to this approach. Don't try to exercise just for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays adult fitness approaches. What good is an exercise program if you stop doing it after a short time!
