The eating habits and sedentary ways of most North Americans has forced people to do something to provide their bodies with enough activity to avoid health risks. spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which actually does more harm than good. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is low as a result. The particular programs may not be to blame, but rather the thinking about exercise itself that may be responsible for this high attrition rate. Consider many younger children who have not yet fallen victim to sedentary habits or obesity. Watch them closely and you can see that the word exercise does not mean anything to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it does not belong to their world. To them playing and having fun is by far more important than the exercise component of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We need to learn from this approach. Don't try to exercise for only health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Make sure it is something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as todays adult fitness approaches. How useful is an exercise program if you do not follow it!
