The eating habits and sedentary ways of most North Americans has forced people to take action on their own to provide their bodies with an adequate amount of exercise to prevent health risks. This might have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be negative. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is low as a result. The programs are not necessarily to blame, but rather the mind set towards exercise itself that could be causing this high attrition rate. Watch some younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a life of low activity. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise does not mean anything to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not a concept that they can understand like adults. To them playing and having fun is hugely more important than the exercise part of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be something you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as targeted as many of todays fitness approaches. How effective is an exercise program if you only do it for a few months!
