The inactive habits and diet of most North Americans has forced people to take it upon themselves to provide their bodies with an adequate amount of exercise to minimize risks to their health. This may have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be harmful in the long run. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is dismally low. The programs themselves may not be the cause, but rather the thinking about exercise itself which is perhaps responsible for this high attrition rate. Have a look at many younger children who have not yet fallen victim to a lifestyle of minimal physical activity. Watch them closely and you can tell that the word exercise means nothing to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not something they really comprehend. To them playing and having fun is above, way above, the exercise part of being active. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We can benefit from this approach. Don't try to exercise solely for health, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Have it be an activity you enjoy, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient as the contemporary high tech fitness approaches. How effective is an exercise program if you give it up after 3 months!
