The diet and inactive lifestyle of most North Americans has forced people to take action to provide their bodies with adequate amounts of physical activity to stay healthy. This might have spawned an attitude toward exercise and fitness which could be negative. The rate at which people actually stay on a 'fitness program' is extremely low. Perhaps it is not the programs or methods, but rather the mental attitude to exercise itself which is blameworthy for this high attrition rate. Keep an eye on younger children who have not yet fallen victim to low physical activity lifestyles. Watch them closely and you will see that the word exercise has no real meaning to them. They know the word and in some sense what it means, but it is not a concept that they can understand like adults. To them playing and having fun is incredibly more important than the exercise part of physical exertion. It is never a chore to them, never a 'workout', always just plain fun... We would really benefit learning from this approach. Don't try to exercise only for healthfulness, appearance, doctors orders, etc, etc. Choose something you like doing, something that is fun for you above all else, even if it is not as efficient or as trendy as some fitness approaches. After all how effective is an exercise program if you give it up after 3 months!
